Ask for clear, current photos and confirm the make, model, condition, and price. If the answers keep changing, the price makes no sense, or someone is pushing you to act immediately, it is better to walk away.

Meet during the day in a public place where the item can be handled safely and legally. A local FFL is often a practical option for a firearm transfer. Tell someone where you are going, and do not bring ammunition to an inspection. Keep the firearm unloaded, the action open, and the muzzle pointed in a safe direction.

Verify the other person's identity and make sure the transfer is allowed under federal, state, and local law. Rules depend on the item and where both parties live. Use an FFL and complete a background check whenever required. Interstate firearm transfers generally need to go through a licensed dealer.

Inspect the actual item before paying. Do not send a deposit just to hold a listing, and be careful with wire transfers, gift cards, cryptocurrency, overpayments, or requests to send money to someone other than the seller. Never share passwords, bank login details, or security codes.

Keep important messages and use a written bill of sale when appropriate. Record only the information needed for the transaction and store it securely. If an item must be shipped, confirm the receiving FFL and carrier requirements before sending it, and use tracked delivery.
